Nancy Barna

Term ends Dec. 2025
Nancy Barna, is certified by the New Jersey School Board Association as a Cerified Board Leader, Master Board Member, and Certified Board Member. Nancy has also served as a WD BOE County Delegate as well as a NJ State Delegate who votes on NJSBA Resolutions at their two yearly meetings.
Nancy and her husband, John, raised three children who graduated from the West Deptford School District: Dr. Ryan Barna – Class of 1998 & Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy – PharmD; Melissa Barna - Jennings – Class of 2003 & Rutgers University – Pharmaceutical Chemistry; and Tyler Barna – Class of 2017, Rutgers Honors College 2021 – Astrophysics, & University of Minnesota – Astrophysics PhD Candidate and Researcher.
Nancy attributes her children’s success to their great teachers and the solid educational foundation they received in West Deptford Public Schools. Much has changed between the years Ryan and Tyler graduated from WDHS – especially in the area of technology. Students went from learning exclusively with textbooks to now using Chromebooks. Chalkboards were replaced with Smart Boards. However, one thing has not changed – Nancy’s dedication to instilling the love of learning in all children.
Mrs. Barna’s leadership roles as President of the GFWC Woman’s Club of West Deptford; Chair of the West Deptford Multiple Dwelling Regulation Board; Trustee to the West Deptford Free Public Library; Cub Master of West Deptford Scout Pack 296; Committee Member of West Deptford Boy Scout Troop 9; Girl Scout Leader, and volunteering as a room mother, and school, team, and club fundraising, provided her with decades of service to the community. That also provided her with great opportunities to listen to what is important to both parents and students in West Deptford.
As a social services volunteer with the Greater Woodbury Cooperative Ministries Food Pantry, Mrs. Barna has worked with connecting the District with information regarding that West Deptford food pantry and the free GWCM Summer Lunchbox Program at its sister pantry in Woodbury. Nancy has worked with advisors for Key Club, Student Council, and other clubs and teams, as well as other local organizations hosting food drives. If your family is suffering from food insecurity, please go to www.gwcm.org for further information.
Mrs. Barna holds a Bachelor's Degree from Rutgers University, where she minored in social work. She also holds an Associate's Degree in paralegal studies from Gloucester County College (n/k/a Rowan College of South Jersey). Nancy has many years of legal experience having worked in both private practice and government law.
In her years on the Board, Nancy has chaired the Teachers, Personnel, Negotiations, Pupil Placement, Progress & Welfare Committees, as well as the Policy Committee. She is not a member of any organization which may present her with a potential conflict of interest in preventing her from being able to perform her duties in decision making, policy, or voting on important District issues.
In her free time, Nancy enjoys attending baseball and soccer games played by her grandsons, Chase and Cole. She also enjoys attending Philadelphia sporting events including Phillies Baseball, Union Soccer, 76ers Basketball, and Flyers Hockey.
“KEEPING STUDENTS FIRST” is Nancy Barna’s focus as she proudly serves her third term on the West Deptford Board of Education.
